“I have an XC90 with the 4C air suspension and a S90 with the rear air suspension. These are the first Volvo’s I’ve owned so I can’t comment on the comparison vs older models.
I’m also a resident of NJ and commiserate with the horrible road conditions. I’ve always been pleased with the with both cars ride and I usually leave them in comfort or eco. Compared to the XC90, the S90 seems a touch smoother, but then again I opted for the all weather
tires on the optional 19” wheels (mostly because of the look and I heard from several people they provide a better ride vs. the 20” stock inscription wheel/tire combo on the S90) where my XC90 has the stock 20” wheels so that could be partof the difference.
Both cars handle moderately rough roads with ease, bu but when I’ve hit a couple of big pot holes it’s still a pretty jarring experience, but no more so than other vehicles I’ve owned such as
BMW etc.
Having the 4 corner air suspension on the XC90 adds some extra features such as lowered ride height in eco/performance mode, ability to lower the rear to load (especially helpful for our old dog to be able to make the hop into the cargo area), easy entry/exit, and the extra ground clearance in off road mode was especially helpful getting around this winter with the snow storms.
Since the S90 is only rear (IIRC the reason doesn’t have all 4 corners with air suspension was bc their wasn’t enough height in the front to accommodate the shock towers), it doesn’t have those features I mentioned before but makes the long trips on the rough roads of the garden state much more bearable.
A couple of months ago we did have a blown fuse for the air
compressor caused by a broken
wire on the XC90 so the air suspension was disabled and it was in a higher than normal ride height. Until I got it fixed (warranty/no charge) it felt like I was driving a F-350 so I guess it does make a marked difference.
I will definitely get this option again on my future Volvo’s.”
