"On the XC90 (as well as the newer S40 and V50), the audio system uses a MOST network, which is great in principle but a curse in reality.
Ignoring for a moment the potential problems of software that may complain because the old HU components are no longer in the car, the first problem you will have is that the XC90 doesn't have a regular HU: the unit on the dash is just a controller, it doesn't have the amp nor the radio. It doesn't even have any audio inputs of any sort!
Depending on the specific configuration of your car, you will have some/all of the following modules in your car:
* The head unit itself, in the dash. It is a MOST controller.
* A CD player/changer in the dash.
* A MD player in the dash.
* The AM/FM tuner is situated in the roof (under that black patch), right next to the built in antenna.
* Same thing for the TMS tuner (if you are in Europe or Japan).
* The D/A converter, source selector, mixer and amplifier is under the passenger seat.
* If you have the NAV (RTI) installed, the device is under the driver seat.
* If you have the subwoofer, it is located in the left rear quarter.
These eight modules are connected via the MOST fiber optic network. Each module works independently of the others, with the MOST controller orchestrating the mess. There are no audio cables anywhere (except the cables going to the 12 speakers -- but not to the subwoofer which is connected to the MOST network directly): the fiber optic can carry up to 16 channels of CD quality stereo signals simultaneously.
---
Correction: up to 15 channels of CD quality stereo signals.
---
And because the MOST system allows multiple sources to connect simultaneously, some modules like the radio tuner modules are always operating (that's why it can be selected by the rear controllers in the C-pillars).
One of the good/bad things about Volvo's MOST implementation is that you can't just add or replace something on the network. The controller needs to know that it is ok to "talk" to the new module. This is part of the anti-theft system. The only way to "convince" the controller to talk to a new module is via a VADIS download, but it will only work with devices supported by Volvo. And this is the curse
Another problem you will have is that there is no standard radio antenna that you can connect to. The antenna and the AM/FM tuner module are incorporated into one of those MOST modules spread throughout the car. If you want to listen to AM or FM in the new radio, you will have to install an standard antenna somewhere in the car as you won't be able to use the integrated antenna.
So, to answer your question: "can I install a different radio?", yes, you can, but you will lose a lot more than just the center speaker (it is not a subwoofer), and you will need to rewire a lot of things as well as install a new antenna.
There was a thread a while back from someone that had reworked his XC90 and replaced everything with an aftermarket system. You should be able to find it with doing a search."
[leche]
